The 5 key success factors were originally developed by Buck Lawrimore during his four decades of work as a success consultant to hundreds of business,  nonprofit and individual clients. He studied a large number of successful businesses, large and small, including his own clients, to determine what are the key success factors that determine the difference between success and failure. His goal was to help his clients – and you – enjoy greater business success.

Beginning with a list of over 120 individual success factors, he clustered them into the 5 Key Success Factors of Business: Strategy, people, marketing, finance and operations. Now after further study, Lawrimore has revised the 5 Key Success Factors into 50 action principles as outlined below. However, this outline will not adequately help you understand what you need to do to achieve each key success factor and principle.   1. Create a vision and specific goals: The first step to achieving success in life is to set clear and specific goals. Without a clear idea of what you want to accomplish, it can be difficult to stay motivated and on track.
    Many people find it helpful to begin with an open-ended vision of their desired future. Just get out a sheet of paper and write down everything you would like to accomplish in the rest of your life. Dream big and don’t worry if it involves things you’ve never done.
    Then when setting goals, it is important to make them specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). This will give you a clear target to aim for and help you stay focused on what you want to achieve. Research has found that writing your goals initially with pen or pencil and paper makes them more effective and allows you to think more creatively. You can transfer them to a smartphone or desktop app after you feel satisfied with your list.

  2. Analyze your unique strengths and talents: Be sure your goals are a good fit for your personality, strengths and character. Use free online assessments such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (we like the version called TypeFinder on Truity.com – affiliate link). Other people like the Big 5 Personality Test. Find out about your character strengths with the free test at VIAcharacter.org. Learn about your business-related strengths at CliftonStrengths.com (not free but very valuable). Think about which goals are a good fit for your strengths and personality, and make adjustments as necessary.
  3. Focus on what you can control: As the Greek Stoics taught, you can only control what you do – your thoughts, feelings, beliefs and actions. They are the real keys to success. You cannot change other people or events, although you might influence them. The more you focus on goals where you can control what happens, the more successful you will be.
  4. Create a plan of action: Once you have set and sharpened your goals, the next step is to create a plan of action. This involves breaking down your goals into smaller, more manageable tasks and then creating a schedule to complete them. Some people prefer to break big goals into projects, with specific outcomes and end points (again make them SMART), then set tasks to achieve each project. This will help you stay organized and focused, and make it easier to track your progress. Consider using free or inexpensive project management or note-taking apps available for all smartphone and desktop platforms.
    One good way to develop an action plan is to use the 5W2H formula of news reporting:
  • Who is going to do it? (Presumably this will be you, but you may need others’ help).
  • What are they going to do?
  • When are they going to do it?
  • Where are they going to do it?
  • Why are they going to do it? (Keep asking why-why-why to get to root purposes.)
  • How are they going to do it?
  • How much is it going to cost in time, money and other resources?

            Another way to develop an action plan is to do a search like “how do I do (this task)” or use one of the new Artificial Intelligence tools like ChatGPT or Notion AI to get more complete answers.

5.  Develop a positive mindset: Having a positive mindset is crucial for achieving success. This means having a belief in yourself and your abilities, and having the confidence to overcome obstacles and challenges. A positive mindset will help you stay motivated and optimistic, even when things get tough. Always think positively about your goals to be successful in life. Never allow negative thoughts to prevail in your mind. Strengthen your mind with meditation and learn how to program your unconscious mind with positive affirmations.

6. Take persistent action: To achieve success, you need to take persistent action towards your goals. This means putting in the work, every day if possible, and making progress, even when you don’t feel like it. Consistency is key, and it’s important to remember that progress is often slow and steady. Be patient, but take some action to move you toward your key goals every day. Avoid wasting time watching TV or scrolling through social media. Be aware of how you use your time every day so you can always find time to take action toward your success goals.
    Former President Calvin Coolidge is remembered for this relevant quote about persistence: “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

7. Learn from failure: Failure is a natural part of the process of achieving success. Instead of getting discouraged, use failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. Reflect on what went wrong and what you can do differently next time. Failure is a valuable teacher and it can help you become more resilient and persistent in the face of adversity. Movie producer Woody Allen once said, “If you’re not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re not doing anything very innovative.”

8. Surround yourself with positive influences: The people you surround yourself with can have a big impact on your success. As much as possible, surround yourself with positive, supportive people who will encourage and motivate you to achieve your goals. Seek out mentorship and guidance from people who have achieved the success you desire. This can be done in person or online. Motivational speaker Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

9. Take care of yourself: Taking care of yourself is crucial for achieving success. This means getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. If you are a person of faith, maintain an ongoing relationship with your Divine Power. Taking care of yourself will help you stay focused, energized, and motivated to be successful in life.

10. Stay organized: Being organized is important for achieving success. This means keeping track of your projects, schedule, deadlines, and tasks. Staying organized will help you stay on top of things, and make it easier to manage your time and stay productive. A number of free apps are available to help you stay organized, or you may prefer a paper notebook as some people do.

11. Learn from others: One of the best ways to achieve success is to learn from others who have already achieved it. Read books, attend seminars, and seek out mentorship from people who have achieved success in your field. You can learn a lot from the experiences and wisdom of others. ‘Life According to Rules of Boxing’ Contains Life Lessons for Us All

Boxing Coach Jolie Glassman

Jolie Glassman says that she taught boxing before she even knew what boxing was. 

“I was a little, blonde girl who would go into the inner-city ghetto and teach the kids in the back. My kids had guns and knives. My school was called ‘Last Chance.’ It was worse than jail.”

Glassman was anti-bullying before anti-bullying was a thing. “If kids were going to fight, I had a rule that, fine, I’d pull the chairs out in a circle, but the fight had to be one-on-one.”

Glassman has taken the life lessons she learned as a teacher and as a coach and world-famous boxing gym owner and has written a book, “Life According to the Rules of Boxing – 101 Rules to Being the Champion of Your Own Life.” It’s a collection of 101 short, deeply impactful life lessons that will allow the reader to “chase mastery and become the champion of their own life.”

“Be positive” spotlights not one but two quotes. The first is from Sugar Ray Leonard, “I’m one of the most optimistic persons in the world. I always believed that there’s another shot, another chance. In boxing, I never gave up. I kept trying, kept trying. Even when things seemed so dim, I continued to push forward to make something happen in my favor.” The second quote is from Muhammad Ali, “Don’t count the days, make the days count.”

“When people tell you that you can’t do it, prove them wrong,” showcases the motto that Manny Paquiao lives by, “Thank you to every person who has told me I can’t. You are just another reason I will.”

Glassman inspires readers with the wise words all readers need to hear, “When someone says you cannot do something, say, ‘Yet.’”

Mindfulness Can Increase Your Happiness and Positivity for a “New Normal”

Mindfulness is one of three key principles that can increase your happiness and positivity in these difficult times.  Mindfulness can take many forms.

While I was preparing to perform prostate surgery on one of my cancer patients, this patient made a request. He asked me to read a book by Norman Vincent Peale called “Positive Imaging” before going into surgery. It was an unusual request, but it seemed like a good book, so I agreed.

A week before the procedure, he had practiced the steps we would take on that eventful day. Each day, he would lie down and imagine that he was on the surgical table where I would perform the procedure and that everything was going well. 

In this period of silence and visualization, one can create for themselves their reality. That is the power of positive imaging. From giving a good presentation, doing well on a test, or acing an interview, positive imaging helps to create a successful outcome.

Since December 2019, we’ve experienced many changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic. New variants seem to appear every day, and the debate is still in the air as to how this will all end. One term we hear is the “new normal.” I think the best definition of a “new normal” would be a world that prioritizes happiness and positivity. 

Understanding and practicing three principles is key to being a happy and positive human being. These principles are:

  • Mindfulness
  • High-energy living
  • Peaceful co-existence 

Mindfulness Involves “Intermittent Silence,” Spending Time with Yourself

One of the core principles of mindfulness is what I call “Intermittent Silence,” which means spending time with yourself. The idea is to give your brain a rest for ten minutes a day. Because your brain is working all the time, we are used to overthinking, overeating, and overspending. 

The simple steps consist of closing your mouth and eyes and engaging in silent listening. It may be more challenging than it appears, but it is incredible once you get the hang of it and commit to the regular practice of intermittent silence. Even when stress or chaos appears, you will feel that silence inside of you, as it helps you weather the inevitable emotional storms. Slowly the peace you feel in those ten minutes a day will start to work its way into your everyday life.

Meditation is an effective method for conserving and channeling energy. Incorporating mindfulness, intermittent silence, and regular meditation into your daily routine will allow you to preserve and channel your energy.

It’s essential to surround yourself with people who fuel your energy and not deplete it. We all know those energy vampires who drain your inner resources. Choose to surround yourself with people who energize your spirit.

Spending time in nature is another vital tool lost in our busy world. Immersing yourself in nature each day, either by going for a walk, being in the sun, standing near a tree, or with animals, is an energizing and delightful way to connect to joy.

Taking these first steps in creating a new habit of peace and happiness may seem intimidating but is achievable with practice. While brushing your teeth, making your bed, or doing dishes, creating moments of mindfulness will have long-lasting benefits.

Dedicating even five minutes a day to this new normal will help create new habits that will make greater peace and happiness within and in your relationships with others. In practicing these steps, just like my patient and I practiced the positive outcome of his surgery, you will find joy in your journey to living a higher energy life filled with happiness and positivity.

Your calendar to declutter in 2022 

Studies say that 54% of UK adults worry about the mental health of someone they know at Christmas. One way to make your Christmas less stressful is to be prepared. RAJA have pulled together a schedule for the whole year for the decluttering process.

January 

  • Take down all of your Christmas decorations and pack them into cardboard boxes so they’re organised for next year.
  • Dispose of your unwanted boxes and cards by recycling them.
  • Return or donate any unwanted Christmas gifts.

February  

  • Reorganise the kitchen by checking the expiry date on foodstuff and putting anything that is out of date in the food waste bin.
  • Tackle the junk drawer. Recycle old takeaway menus, find proper storage for receipts and manage other miscellaneous items.
  • Take an inventory of your small appliances and cooking utensils and get rid of items that you no longer need.

March  

  • Clear out your bathroom including your medicine cabinet. Check to see if medicines are still in date and dispose of items that have expired. Store them by medicine type, such as liquids, pills and emergency first aid.
  • Clear out your vanity drawer by assessing if creams, make-up and bath products are still okay to use.

April  

  • Go through your closet and cut your winter wardrobe down. Pick out anything you didn’t use and donate or sell them.
  • If you have children, do the same for their closet. See what clothes fit them (and will still fit in the next six months).

June  

  • Go through your storage space such as a garage, shed or attic. Sort your space into specific zones, one for household tools, sports equipment, seasonal decorations and garden supplies.

July  

  • Craft items such as paints, pens and other bits can create clutter quickly. Store various craft items in cardboard storage boxes.
  • Sort out all of your books, boardgames and DVDs in your living room or games room.

August  

  • During the summer holidays, cull your linen cupboard. Recycle thread-bare towels, sheets, blankets and linens or donate them to your local animal shelter.

September  

  • Take time to organise your home office space. Invest in some desk organisers, such as pen pots and filing systems for documents that you have to keep.
  • Cable organisers are an easy way to ensure that your desk looks tidy.

October  

  • You’ll want to repeat the process you did in April with winter clothes. Look at the items you didn’t use and sell, donate or repurpose them.
  • Store away your sandals, flip-flops and other summer shoes. Get rid of the ones you won’t use next year.

November  

  • Go through the decorations that you packed away in January. Donate or sell what you won’t use.
  • Again, make sure you’re up to date with what is in the kitchen cabinets since you organised it in February.

December  

  • Enjoy all the festivities in a clutter-free house.
